Sweet, Sweet Municipal Water

We’re so happy to hear about this new trend in hoighty toighty restaurants. Many San Francisco and New York restaurants are now proudly serving tap water rather than pay the hefty cost, and heftier carbon footprint, of importing something which is supposed to be the most plentiful substance on earth.

This all reminds us of something we read recently detailing the true cost of Fiji water. It’s all particularly sad, when you realize that bottled water is really no safer for you than tap.

I remember bussing tables during teenage years of summer droughts when the rage became to place a placard on each table declaring the omission of water service for “environmental reasons”, except when requested by patrons. That silliness went away, thank god, and we can hope that the rage of offering tap water proudly won’t be taken to the extreme (again I refer to the dirty looks thrown off by trader joe’s cashiers – smug bastards! – when asking for plastic instead of paper). Either that, or let’s hope that those crazy Italians run a pipeline over here straight from the Pellegrino plant so we can get that straight from the tap as well.

[...] Now, you might be saying “Hey, Fiji water tastes amazing!” We tend to agree, but for that, we can refer you to an old post which enumerates the environmental costs of that sense of amazement. [...]
